Medical Assistant – FT/PRN
Summary/Objective
The Medical Assistant performs duties essential to the patient visit and other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
1. General office skills.
2. Disseminate information by telephone, mail service or e-mail.
3. Performs other duties as assigned.
4. Triage responsibilities.
5. Assist providers in patient diagnosis by gathering patient history, obtaining vital signs, chief complaints, verifying medications and allergies, ensuring patients are properly dressed/undressed for exam. Afterwards, review the chart for presence of information that the provider might need during the visit (labs, consults, ER reports).
6. Must have an understanding of legal and ethical issues.
7. Scheduling and managing patient appointments and referrals with required documentation.
8. Clean, prepare, and sterilize instruments.
9. Performs electrocardiograms, phlebotomy, and laboratory procedures as directed by health care provider, including but not limited to pregnancy tests, strep tests, urine dips, hemoglobin, and blood sugar testing.
10. Perform routine administrative and clinical tasks such as aerosol treatments ordered by a physician.
11. Updating and filing patient’s medical records.
12. Collect, prepare, and perform basic laboratory specimens and tests.
13. Instruct patients about medications and special diets.
14. Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.
15. Telephone prescriptions to pharmacy.
16. Ensure exam rooms are clean, stocked, and ready for patients.
17. Remove sutures and change dressings.
18. Observe and follow required safety protocols, including handling and disposal of sharps, use of personal protective equipment, exposure to blood borne pathogens, and general safety of employees and patients.
19. Assist other team members as needed.
20. Attends staff meetings.
Required Education and Experience
1. Graduate of certified medical assistant program or equivalent
2. Applicant must be organized and able to prioritize assignments
3. Must be able to do multi-tasking, problem-solving, and have decision-making skills
4. Follow detailed instructions with attention to detail
5. Ability to work with a culturally diverse group of people
6. Must be proficient in computer knowledge – Microsoft Office, Excel
7. Excellent typing skills
8. EMR experience a plus
9. Knowledge of medical terminology
10. Good customer relationship skills and a strong work ethic
11. Applicant must possess independence and initiative
Work Environment
This job has frequent exposure to dust, constant noise, vibrations and hands in water. This job has occasional intermittent noise, outside exposure, excessive heat, cleaning agents, excessive cold, dampness, excessive humidity, dry atmospheric conditions, and animals.
Physical Demands
Physical demands include lifting up to 30 pounds daily, carrying up to 30 pounds daily, 1-2 hours of standing at a time, 5-10 minutes of walking at a time throughout the day, sitting 15-30 minutes at a time. Color distinction is necessary, and no greater loss of hearing than 40dB average for 500, 1000, 2000 H.
